When Erica and Colt Powell set out to find the perfect place to raise their growing family, they never imagined they’d find a community that felt like paradise. But that’s exactly what happened when they decided to make the move to Nocatee in 2020. Now, five years later, the Powells – along with their two boys, Zane (4) and Maverick (2) – couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
Erica and Colt, high school sweethearts who were born and raised in Jacksonville, started out living in a condo but soon realized they needed a bigger home when they found out they were expecting their first child. That’s when their realtor introduced them to Nocatee - named one of the Best Places to Raise a Family by Niche for 4 consecutive years in a row.
"We had some friends who lived here, and every time we visited, we saw people out riding in their golf carts, kids playing in the parks, and families really enjoying life together, Erica recalls." “It just felt like the perfect place to raise a family."
From that first visit, they knew Nocatee was special. With its family-friendly atmosphere, top-notch amenities, and walkable neighborhoods, it checked every box on their list. They chose to settle in Siena at Nocatee Town Center, drawn to its Spanish style homes, open floor plans, soaring ceilings, and proximity to everything they needed. “We loved the architecture, but more than that, we loved how close it was to Publix and the daycare," Colt says.
One of the things the Powells love most about Nocatee is its strong sense of community. Throughout the year, the neighborhood buzzes with activity. Food Truck Fridays brings families together for an easy and fun night out, while neighborhood block parties fill the weekend calendar. Parks and playgrounds throughout Nocatee are constantly alive with children laughing, and the community pools offer endless entertainment, no matter the season.
Staying active is a big part of life for the Powells and the Nocatee environment makes it effortless. They quickly found their rhythm by participating in all Nocatee’s organized events. Erica has even taken an active role in bringing women together by starting a weekly women’s pickleball group, Pretty in Pickle. What started as a casual game among friends has grown into a community-wide gathering, with 30-40 women playing every Thursday. "It's been amazing to see how many women have come together to play, meet new friends, and support each other," she says. “We even work with some of the local restaurants to host after-hours events, which in turn also supports small businesses in the area."
Their kids are also thriving in the active, outdoor lifestyle Nocatee offers. Scooter rides through the neighborhood, soccer practice at the nearby fields, golf cart rides to Publix and the Town Center, and playdates at Addison Park are all part of their daily routine. From running the annual Thanksgiving 5K to hosting their annual Superbowl party, the Powells have created countless special moments in Nocatee. "We hit the neighborhood jackpot," Colt says with a laugh. "Our direct neighbors are like family now. If I ever need a hand with a house project, I know I can call, and they’ll be there in five minutes."
Beyond sports and fitness, the Powells love exploring the local dining scene. Weekend brunches, date nights and casual lunches at nearby restaurants like Valley Smoke, have also become part of their routine. Living so close to the Town Center means a quick golf cart ride is all it takes to reach their favorite spots, whether for groceries, a quick coffee run, or an evening out.
For a young family, Nocatee provides a lifestyle that is hard to match. Their boys spend their days outside, playing with neighborhood friends, and cooling off at their favorite spot - the splash park. Even daily routines, like school-dop offs or trips to the West End Park are made easier by the thoughtful layout of the community. Safety is another key factor – the ability to go for a run in the early mornings or an evening bike ride without concern gives the Powells peace of mind.
With an ideal location, a strong community, and an unbeatable family-friendly atmosphere, Nocatee has proven to be the perfect place for the Powells. And as their boys grow, they look forward to continuing to make memories in the Siena neighborhood they now call home.
